Overview

Veins return blood to the heart at low pressure, helped by valves and by the squeeze of surrounding muscles. Deep veins run alongside the arteries; superficial veins such as the cephalic, basilic and saphenous veins lie just under the skin. Blood from the gut drains first to the liver through the hepatic portal vein before joining the inferior vena cava. The pulmonary veins are the exception to the rule: they carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
