Nervous system
Brain, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves, ganglia and meninges.
Overview
The nervous system gathers information, decides and commands. The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system; the cranial and spinal nerves with their ganglia form the peripheral nervous system. This model is richest in the head: the cerebral gyri and lobes, the basal ganglia, thalamus and hypothalamus, the brainstem and cerebellum, the ventricles, the optic pathway and the nerves of the orbit. Peripheral nerves of the limbs are not part of this BodyParts3D release.
Functions
- Sense the environment and the body's internal state
- Integrate information, memory and emotion
- Control voluntary and involuntary movement
- Regulate organs through the autonomic system
Clinical notes
- Stroke: loss of blood supply to part of the brain
- Epilepsy, migraine and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's
- Nerve compression syndromes and neuropathies
Organs & groups in this system
Brain
The cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem: about 1.4 kg of tissue that controls thought, movement, sensation and every organ.
Cerebellum
The 'little brain' behind the brainstem coordinates balance, posture and the timing of movements.
Brainstem
Midbrain, pons and medulla connect the brain to the spinal cord and run breathing, heart rate and consciousness.
